Film Opening Analysis - 8 Mile

Framing & Shot Types -

The whole scene involves a lot of close ups on the character performing different actions while attempting to hype him self up for the rap battle, the director has done this to show the characters mentality and build up his image shot by shot to the audience (The audeince bieng fans of rap / eminem). The scene also portrays the importance of this character to the movie as it shows a lot of focus on him and the things he does, also the fact he is getting shouted by another character at the end shows he is clearly relevant to the plot line. The whole opening is made up of close ups and maybe one or two medium shots. The director has done this to keep the audience focused on the character, and allow them time to create their own ideas of him, based on what he looks like and how he is acting. Mostly as they cant really focus on anything else due to the scene being set in a bathroom, and the background bieng slightly blurred out anyway.

Mis-En-Scene -

The lighting is dull a very grey, and sort of clinical. This puts forward connotations to the audience that its not much of a welcoming or warm enviroment to be in, not hostile but unnerving. There is not much interms of props for the scene, its very bare and set in a typical destroyed and horrible public bathroom. The only props the character asctually having being the earphones he is wearing.

Use Of Sound-

From the very beggining a song is played  (Shook Ones, Pt II by Mobb Deep) which the character is presumobly listening to on his earphones as he is preparing for a rap battle, making the situation seem all the more real and intense due to the flow of the song and the lyrics it contains. The song plays throughout all the intro, as the target audience has time to gather whats happening and catch onto the smooth beat with lyrics which show struggle in life yet the refusal to back down, the music transfers that sort of down yet ready to fight mood on to the audience, allowing them to further connect with the character.

Use Of Edititng -

The editing is subtle, no flashy or especially outogoing effects were used. The editing contains a lot of cuts from one bit of the character to the other, for example when it goes from the view of his feet shuffling on the floor, to than his face looking in the mirror. Its a constant flow of his actions, cutting and changeing the view from one to the other.

Typography -

All the text used through out the scenes remain the same font, a simple design coloured in orange a very non flashy and dull sort of orange, which could reflect the sort of place the scenes take place in. The title of the film appears at the beggining only a little larger than the rest of the sub-titles and other texts. Most of the text is presented on a fully black background or in a corner of the screen when the video actually starts.
